Competing around the world and representing New Zealand for ten years with the Wheel Blacks, I have put my shoulders through a lot of pain! Turning 30 last year was a bit of a wakeup call…. I still have the passion to perform at the top, but I was noticing it was taking me longer to recover from training sessions. I realised I needed to be proactive about looking after my body, not only to continue to excel, but to make sure my shoulders will keep me moving for the rest of my life. About 6 months ago John Gibb tried to encourage me to include in my day to day diet, some blackcurrant fruit. My answer was a bit dismissive and yes I love blackcurrants, believe in their goodness and often have a BC drink etc but did nothing. I had a similar lecture from John about three weeks ago so decided to give this chosen fruit of ours a go. I started having a small quantity of blackcurrants with my weet-bix in the morning, just a small handful. After about three days Raewyn enquired if I was feeling any effect from my new diet, I did the usual dismissive answer but later in the day I thought I am feeling good today. That was to weeks ago and since then I haven’t had so much energy for a long time, I feel great, am motivated more then ever. (Yesterday I left to go diving in the Sounds at 5am drove for 2 .5 hours, boating in rough waters for 4 hours, scuba dive for 2 hours then drive home cleaned up the boat, scallops and crayfish then went and finished mowing, spot spraying a block of blackcurrants).

I started using Sujon Blackcurrant powder when I came to play basketball in Nelson a few years ago. I take a heaped teaspoon each morning and then again after I have finished my last training of the day. I feel that it really helps me recover and even when I am doing hard power sessions at the gym I don’t seem to have as much muscle soreness in the next days.
